After successfully surviving this winter without a cold, not even a sniffle, I was feeling pretty good about things. After all, I do write articles about staying healthy using good nutrition and am a distributor for a company that has really great nutrition products, too. Thus, I am supposed to stay healthy and not be sick.

Then it happened! All of a sudden I began to feel a little bit puny, started sneezing, and developed a runny nose. As a person who doesn’t usually experience allergies, I was puzzled. I had not even been around anyone who had a cold. Oh, but one afternoon when I was cleaning for a friend who had been hospitalized and undergoing rehab for several months, I did kick up a lot of dust, mixed with powder and cat hair that had been there for many months. At first, I just thought I was extra tired because of having had a couple long, hard days of doing physical work.

However, when the sneezing and sniffles showed up, I started analyzing. What is this? Do I have a cold? Have I developed a new allergy that I never had before? Thus, I looked at common symptoms of colds and of allergies. My conclusion was that most likely I had acquired a dust mite allergy, which did go away in a few days.

A cold is caused by a virus and is contagious. An allergy can be caused by many things, but is not contagious. What really causes an allergic reaction is your own immune system. Allergies get started because of exposure. Even though you’ve been there many times, for some reason this time, the body flags it as an invader. At this time the immune system studies the allergy and gets ready for the next exposure by developing antibodies, which are special cells designed to protect it. That activates other cells called mast cells. The mast cells are responsible for allergy symptoms in the lungs, skin, lining of the nose and the intestinal tract.

There are various kinds of allergens:

Airborne allergens, such as pollen, animal dander, dust mites and mold.

Alcohol can make you laugh or it can make you cry, it can make you lively or make you sleepy, it can boost your confidence or make you act the fool. How can alcohol have all these different effects on people? If we want to know how alcohol affects our moods and behaviors we must first understand a bit about how the brain works.

The human brain is made up of about 100 billion nerve cells (also known as neurons). Everything that we think, feel or do is the result of electrical signals passing back and forth between neurons. These electrical signals require the help of chemicals called neurotransmitters in order to pass from neuron to neuron. Scientists have identified around 60 different neurotransmitters so far and tell us that there are probably many more yet to be identified.

Different neurotransmitters have different effects in the brain. For example, serotonin is connected with mood. People suffering from clinical depression tend to have a shortage of serotonin in their brains, and medications like Prozac can help to alleviate depression by increasing the availability of serotonin in the brain. Endorphins are a class of neurotransmitters which act as the brain’s natural painkillers.

Electrical signals in the brain are transmitted in the following manner: The neuron which is sending the electrical signal releases a neurotransmitter, and the neuron which is receiving the electrical signal accepts the neurotransmitter at a site which is called a receptor. When the neurotransmitter from the first neuron chemically binds to the receptor of the second neuron the electrical signal is transmitted. Neurotransmitters and receptors work like locks and keys: there is at least one different receptor for each different neurotransmitter. For example, an endorphin receptor can only be triggered by and endorphin, a serotonin receptor can only be triggered by serotonin, and so on. Different neurons have different receptors. Some neurons will only be triggered by serotonin, some only by an endorphin, and so on for all the different neurotransmitters.

Okay–now what does all of this have to do with alcohol?

Every mood altering substance from heroin to coffee has an effect on the neurotransmitter system of the brain. Some psychoactive drugs affect only one specific neurotransmitter system, whereas others affect many. Morphine, for example, mimics the neurotransmitter beta-endorphin–a natural painkiller found in the brain. Morphine is shaped like beta-endorphin and binds to the beta-endorphin receptors thus acting as a painkiller and also giving rise to feelings of pleasure. Caffeine is shaped like Adenosine and acts on the adenosine receptors. Alcohol on the other hand affects many different neurotransmitters, not just one, Why is this?

Morphine and caffeine are both large molecules. Neurotransmitters are also large molecules. Morphine and caffeine have the effects which they do because of their similarity in shape to neurotransmitters which occur naturally in the brain. Alcohol on the other hand is a quite small molecule. Alcohol does not mimic a neurotransmitter. So then how does alcohol affect neurotransmitters?

Alcohol is a fat soluble molecule. Fats (called lipids) are a major component of all cell membranes, including the cell membranes of neurons. Alcohol enters the cell membranes of neurons and changes their properties. Receptors are located on cell membranes and this means that receptor properties are altered by the presence of alcohol. Cell membranes also control the release of neurotransmitters and this means that the release of neurotransmitters is also affected by the presence of alcohol.

The effects of alcohol on receptors and neurotransmitters have been well documented for several neurotransmitters and their corresponding receptors. These effects are summarized in Table 1.

Drugs like morphine or cocaine have been referred to as “chemical scalpels” because of their very precise effects on just one neurotransmitter system. Alcohol on the other hand is much more like a chemical hand grenade in that it affects just about all parts of the brain and all neurotransmitter systems. Alcohol affects all these systems at the same time. When people drink alcohol they become lively and excited because alcohol raises dopamine levels just as cocaine does, although alcohol does not raise dopamine levels anywhere near as much as cocaine does. When people drink alcohol they feel calm and lose their anxieties because alcohol makes the GABA receptors function more efficiently just like valium does. The reason that people tend to fall asleep after drinking alcohol or taking valium is also due to this effect on the GABA receptor. And alcohol has a painkilling effect like morphine and produces a high similar to morphine because it causes a release of endorphins into the brain thus raising the endorphin levels. (Note that the effect of morphine is different from alcohol in its mechanism–morphine imitates endorphins and binds to endorphin receptors whereas alcohol increases the amounts of the endorphins in the brain.) Finally we come to glutamate. Alcohol greatly inhibits the functioning of the glutamate receptor. Glutamate is responsible for the formation of new memories as well as for muscular coordination. It is alcohol’s effect on the glutamate receptor which leads to slurred speech, and staggering in people who have consumed alcohol, as well as the inability to remember what one did that night when the morning after comes. Perhaps the only positive effect of this effect on the glutamate receptor is a feeling of muscular relaxation. Many negative effects of alcohol such as automobile fatalities due to drunk driving are the result of the loss of coordination caused by alcohol’s effect on the glutamate receptor. Even small amounts of alcohol have a major impact on coordination–so never, never drink and drive.

You have probably observed that alcohol seems to have different effects on different people. Some people quickly become sleepy after drinking just a little alcohol whereas others become animated and want to just go, go, go. Research on mice suggests that this difference is genetic. Scientists have been able to breed strains of mice which quickly go to sleep after ingesting alcohol. They have also been able to breed strains of mice which become very active after ingesting alcohol. This strongly suggests that genetics determines which neurotransmitter system is most strongly affected by alcohol in which individual. Individuals who become sleepy soon after drinking probably have their GABA system more strongly affected by alcohol. And individuals who become lively and excited after drink probably have their dopamine system most strongly affected.

The effects of alcohol on the brain do not end when alcohol is completely metabolized and out of the system–what happens next is something called neurotransmitter rebound. This rebound effect is most easily illustrated if we look at what happens to many people when they use a drink or two as a sleep aid. These people often tend to wake up in the middle of the night and find themselves unable to fall back asleep. What is happening is this–alcohol has enhanced the functioning of the GABA system and has made these people feel relaxed and sleepy. The entire time that alcohol is present the GABA system is struggling to overcome the effects of alcohol and return to normal functioning. When all the alcohol is finally out of the body, the GABA system overshoots the mark and leaves people feeling restless and wide awake. This is why alcohol is not a good sleep aid. Large quantities of alcohol can keep a person asleep longer, but drinking large quantities of alcohol has its own negative effects. Neurotransmitter rebound seems also to be implicated in symptoms of hangovers such as hyper-sensitivity to light and in alcohol withdrawal syndrome giving rise to feelings of anxiety and panic and other symptoms as well.

Some medications used to treat alcohol abuse such as campral and naltrexone work by affecting the neurotransmitter systems. Naltrexone (also called revia) is an opioid receptor antagonist. Naltrexone works by binding to the endorphin receptors (which are sometimes also called opioid receptors) and blocking them off so that opiates cannot bind to these receptors. Unlike opiates or endorphins naltrexone has no painkilling effects and no pleasurable effects. Naltrexone simply blocks off the endorphin receptors so that neither opiates nor endorphins can have their painkilling or pleasurable effects. Naltrexone is highly effective with people who use opiates such as morphine or heroin since these drugs have no effect at all when the receptors are blocked by naltrexone. Naltrexone has some effect in helping people to abstain from alcohol or to moderate their use, however it is not as effective with alcohol as with opiates because alcohol affects many different neurotransmitters. The downside of naltrexone is that the body’s natural painkillers, the endorphins, are unable to do their job when it is present. People taking naltrexone are advised to wear medic-alert bracelets so that doctors will know that painkillers are ineffective on these people.

Campral (also known as acamprosate) is a glutamate receptor modulator. Campral helps eliminate cravings for alcohol in long term heavy drinkers. It is hypothesized that long term heavy drinking upsets the glutamate neurotransmitter system and that campral helps to restore this to normal.

No discussion of alcohol and the brain would be complete without a mention of possible brain damage caused by alcohol abuse. It is likely that we have all heard that drinking kills brain cells. However, does scientific evidence bear out this common folk saying? A 1993 study by Jensen and Pakkenberg published in Lancet titled “Do alcoholics drink their neurons away?” compared the brains of alcoholics to the brains of non-alcoholics. This study found that the white matter of the brains of alcoholics was significantly depleted. The gray matter, however, was the same in both alcoholics and non-alcoholics. This is interesting since it is the gray matter that does the thinking. The gray matter has been compared to a network of computers, and the white matter to the cables linking them together. The brain does not produce new gray matter to replace that which is lost. The brain can, however, produce new white matter to replace white matter which has been lost. The researchers concluded that loss of white matter do to heavy drinking may possibly not constitute irreparable damage.

There is, however, a form of irreparable brain damage which can be caused by long term heavy drinking. This is Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, also known as “wet brain”. Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndromeis not caused by a loss of brain cells–it is caused by a deficiency of vitamin B1 (also known as thiamine). Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome can have several causes including extreme malnutrition, prolonged periods of vomiting due to morning sickness or an eating disorder, kidney dialysis, stomach stapling, or alcohol abuse. The vast majority of cases of Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome which occur in the United States are caused by severe, long-term, heavy drinking. Alcohol can lead to Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome because it blocks the absorption of thiamine. Symptoms of Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome include amnesia, inability to form new memories, confusion, hallucinations, and confabulation. Some of the more severe symptoms of Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome can be treated with thiamine, however in most cases many of the symptoms persist for a lifetime.

Have scientists discovered everything that there is to know about alcohol’s effects on the brain? It seems that this is clearly not the case. Scientists believe that alcohol likely affects many more neurotransmitters than the four discussed in this article. Of all the home remedies for self-healing that I’ve posted, Oil Pulling is the one I am most excited about. Why? Because it is EASY, INEXPENSIVE, and HIGHLY EFFECTIVE for so many conditions.

What is Oil Pulling?

This simple procedure of slowly swishing oil around in your mouth helps the body self-heal from an amazing number of ailments and disorders by detoxifying the salivary and oral tissues. It is an Ayurvedic – i.e., from ancient Eastern medicine – practice that has been known to help the body overcome any number of ailments and disorders.

Here’s how you do oil pulling. Print out and follow the steps CAREFULLY:

1. First thing in the morning, before eating or drinking, put ONE TABLESPOON of refined SESAME or SUNFLOWER oil in your mouth. (For children or those with a small mouth, a bit less is more comfortable. And don’t bother to buy the expensive organic stuff. The supermarket variety works just fine.) Some people recommend coconut oil to help with teeth whitening, or safflower oil for a milder taste. But the original Ayurveda recommends sesame or sunflower.

2. Set a timer for 10 minutes, even 5 at first. Later you can increase to 15-20 minutes as you get more comfortable with the slow pulling

3. Slowly swish, suck and pull the oil through your teeth in the front, in the back, top and bottom, from side to side. I like to check my email or do some chore around the house to keep me occupied during this time.

4. DO NOT GARGLE the oil.

5. DO NOT SWALLOW the oil at any time.

6. When the timer goes off, spit into the toilet. Not the sink. See below for why.

7. Immediately rinse your mouth out SEVERAL TIMES and vigorously with warm water, gargling a few times to rinse the back of your mouth out as well, and spitting into the toilet also. Then flush the toilet. You definitely want to brush your teeth now.

8. Drink 1 to 2 glasses of filtered or spring water.

That’s basically it, so get started. The rest of this article talks about why the various steps are important and how Oil Pulling actually works and what to watch out for.

1. You need an empty stomach for this to work, so that’s why it is suggested you do it first thing in the morning. You can use a brush with no toothpaste on it at this point just to clear the surface of the teeth for better whitening effect and also to leech any stray mercury in the teeth.

If you have chronic or more serious conditions that you want to heal faster, you will want to Oil Pull two or three times a day. So, just make sure you have not eaten for about 3-4 hours and not had anything to drink for 1 hour. This ensures that the lining of your mouth is free of food/beverage particles and also that you will not vomit. Oil Pulling more than once a day helps you detox faster.

2. Oil Pull for at least 5-10 minutes. 15 to 20 is better and gets a more thorough result. The point is that what you spit out should be white and foamy, not yellow like the oil. If yellow, you’ve not done it long enough (although there may be times when you feel you just have to spit it out — that’s fine once in a while).

3. As you pull the oil through your teeth, make sure you get the gums and molars in the back of your mouth as well as the back of your tongue. The tongue has reflex points to every organ of the body, so this is one of the ways that Oil Pulling helps clear out the whole system.

4. Don’t gargle the oil, as it may cause a swallow reflex.

5. You don’t want to swallow this stuff. It is filled with parasites, viruses and “bacteria embryos” which can be seen at 600 magnification as writhing organisms. This stuff is poisonous and can make you sick. It’s why you already ARE sick or have some health problem or other. (One of our users reported that he “saved” the spit and an hour later saw the stuff writhing in the cup with the naked eye. This is not for the faint-hearted.)

If you feel you must swallow, here is how to stop the impulse: clear your throat. This action reverses the swallow impulse.

6. If you spit into the sink instead of the toilet, you will want to rinse the sink with bleach to kill the bacteria that would otherwise multiply there. Yuck.

7. I rinse my mouth at least 6 or 7 times to get any remaining bacteria out and do it vigorously, as well as gargle a few times.

8. After 1 or 2 glasses of water, then you can have breakfast or finish whatever your morning routine is. Plus, water first thing in the morning hydrates your tissues and sets up your brain for a brighter day ahead!

You can buy the sesame or sunflower oil at your local supermarket or cold-pressed from the health food store. A few people have reported that sesame tastes better than sunflower. Others feel that sesame is slimier and makes them gag. Different strokes.

The early signs of health improvement are whiter, shinier teeth; feeling refreshed and relaxed when waking up; balanced appetite and better eliminations; deeper sleep; disappearing pouches/dark circles below the eyes; more energy and stronger immune function throughout the day.

Acute ailments may clear within a day or two or three just with Oil Pulling. Chronic conditions may take weeks, even months to a year to clear completely from the body.

How does Oil Pulling heal the body?

In Ayurvedic medicine, the practice of Oil Pulling aims at purifying the taste buds. This is a sensory system that relies on balancing the 6 tastes in your diet to keep the whole body in a state of health and balance.

Additionally, the tongue is like the hand, foot, eye or ear in Eastern medicine – that is, it is a map of the body in miniature, containing reflex points to organs throughout the entire system – the spleen, heart, liver, colon, spine, etc. Therefore, detoxifying the tongue has a reflex soothing and purifying action on all the organs connected to it by meridians and reflex points.

The tongue becomes more supple and the lubrication from the oil prevents dryness, which we might think of as an aging of tissue. In modern terms, dryness of tissue is seen as a sign of nutritional depletion which oil can remedy, along with the antioxidant values these oils possess.

Mouth dryness is a common side-effect from many medications and may eventually lead to damage to the gums and/or loss of the teeth.

As the oil pulls the saliva from the mucous membranes in the mouth, it also pulls excess mucous, bacteria and toxins out into the spit. These would otherwise continue to circulate throughout the body, enabling both the degeneration of organs and systems and the progression of disease states and aging.

For this reason, Oil Pulling can be seen as one of the most vital practices to adopt for not only cure but also prevention.

***What happens if you get sick or your condition worsens during the Oil Pulling detox period?***

If you pick up a cold or flu or some other problem during your Oil Pulling days, KEEP AT IT. The Oil Pulling will help you get through it faster. This happened to me – I came down with a bad strep throat one morning after about a week of Oil Pulling. So I increased to twice a day from the morning routine I was doing. Strep in the past has taken me a week to 10 days to run through with or without medication, but it was gone on the third morning just from Oil Pulling!

Then I realized that this was probably not a “new” attack but most likely the remnants of all the other times I’d had strep throat going back to childhood. The Oil Pulling was in fact “bringing up the old, incompletely healed stuff” for a final healing.

I say “final” because I used to always wake up in the morning with a mildly scratchy sore throat which I now do not experience now at all, thank God. So I believe this chronic condition is finally gone from my body.

In homeopathic terms,”getting worse before it gets better” is called a “healing crisis,” where the disease seems to recur or worsen during treatment. No one likes this, but in fact it is a positive effort by the body to mobilize a stronger healing response.

Ayurvedic physician Dr. Karach says, “Do not stop when your state gets worse. There is no reason to interrupt the treatment even when the body temperature gets higher. It is a healing temperature… a worsening of your health state is a sign that your disease is disappearing.”

Rest assured that this apparent “worsening” is very temporary. Continue with the Oil Pulling and making progress on your health concern. Don’t give up, in fact, do it more often each day and watch the condition clear out finally and permanently.

Other positive results I noticed within the first couple of weeks of Oil Pulling include: decreased tooth sensitivity, better sleep, regular eliminations (I’d been skipping a day about once a week before this), whitening of a dark spot in back of a tooth at the site of a root canal, shinier and whiter teeth, less fuzzy coating on my tongue, lightening of dark circles under my eyes, sharper vision with better color appreciation, weight loss.

This is the most amazing health tool I’ve ever come across in over 35 years of studying holistic and alternative techniques. Go for it!

When Dr. Karach examined the gargled milk-white oil under a microscope with 600 magnification, he saw live organisms swimming in it. It’s poisonous, so never swallow it, he warns. These poisons are bacteria-embryos, which, if not eliminated, cause diseases. Apparently, Dr. Karach cured his own chronic blood disease and 15-year-old arthritis with Oil Pulling after many months of consistent practice.

The first sign of improvement is in the teeth–they become firm and white, he says. Other healing indications: fresh, relaxed feeling on waking up, disappearing dark pouches below the eyes, a new appetite and energy, better memory and deeper sleep.

Dr. Karach swears by the mouth oil-wash for anything from organ-disorders, skin-diseases, menstrual problems, paralysis to every ache in the human anatomy. You can pull even when you have fever, he says, adding, it takes anything from two days to a year to cure a disease.

If these claims sound exaggerated, he told a conference of Ukrainian cancer specialists, try out the process yourself.

Interestingly, Ayurveda advises oil gargling “to purify the taste-buds and the entire system”, as explained by Dr Deepak Chopra in “Perfect Health.” According to this life science, the tongue is mapped by organ-locations – that is, each section of the tongue is connected to the organs — kidneys, lungs, spleen, liver, heart, pancreas, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine.

Thus, an oil-mouth-massage soothes and stimulates the key meridians where taste meets organ. Simultaneously, as in any skin-massage, the inner skin and lining of the mouth, palate and tongue become warm and supple and the lubrication prevents dryness (the vatic effect).

In modern dietetics too, dryness is discussed. For example, lack of Vitamin A causes the outer lining of the eyeball to dry and wrinkle, and affects vision.

As any dietician would tell you, all oils contain 960 micrograms of vitamin A per 10 gm (the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A per adult is 600 micrograms). So, it’s possible that oil pulling helps in reaching the required retinal to the eyeballs and keeps them elastic and smooth.

Likewise, the Ayurvedic `purification of taste-buds’ also has its equivalent in dietetics as `antioxidants’. Oxidation literally means `the putrefaction of body-tissues’.

And oil-soluble vitamins A, C, D, and E are antioxidants that protect and prevent the decaying process and help maintain the integral functioning of cell membranes. That’s why many people are ingesting vitamin E pills to stem `aging’ (oxidation).

Note #1:

Keeping the chin tilted up makes sure the oil gets to the back molars.

Note #2:

Only sesame and sunflower oils produce the most favorable results.

If after meals, wait at least 4 hours before you Oil Pull. After drinking, wait 1 hour.

Note #4:

A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that a new disease/ailment == or perhaps one from the past that never completely healed — is being cured.

Note #5:

Do not stop Oil Pulling if you feel aggravated symptoms or heightened side-effects. Your body is healing. Be patient. Work WITH it, both mentally and physically. After all, it’s the only one you’ve got and Oil Pulling will do more for it than any other single therapy.

Tip #1 – Quit Date Established – Set a date on your calendar in which you are going to Start trying to quit and stick to it! Prepare for that day by trying to make cutbacks. Make the date in the very near future. If the date is to far along, you may lose your motivation to quit. About 2 weeks is a good quit date to establish. Try smoking one less cigarette during the first week and two less cigarettes during the second week. Therefore, by your third week(start date), you have a little extra already devoted into the hellish journey of quitting forever!

Tip #2 – Try Candy or Gum – This is pretty much the most popular tip when it comes to quitting smoking. But it works! If you have never tried this route, I definitely recommend you do so! At least gum or candy have a decent taste, rather than cigarettes. This is my least important tip, because it doesn’t exactly replace the feeling of actually smoking a cigarette, but certainly worth a try!

Tip #3 – Try Delaying – If you think you need a cigarette right this second, wait! Build a little self-discipline and wait 10 minutes after you get that craving! After a few times of doing that, increase your wait duration by 5 minutes. Do that a few more times and increase your wait duration by another 5 minutes. See how that works for you. Maybe use that 10 or 5 minutes to chew a gum stick!

Tip #4 – Exercise! Exercise! Exercise! – There are so many benefits you can receive from proper exercise, I could write an entire article over them and still have enough information left over to question if I should do a second one or not! But relating to quitting smoking, if you exercise, you will sweat! Sweating is a great way to release nicotine from your body! Sweat that nasty stuff out! Plus, exercise makes you feel amazing! You may not feel the need to smoke a cigarette after exercising just from the pure feeling of awesomeness!

Tip #5 – Remind Yourself Your Reason For Wanting To Quit – If things ever get tough, remember why you wanted to quit in the first place! How important are those reasons? Don’t just think of the reasons. Write them down and say them out loud! At the end of reading your list of reasons repeat “I Will Quit”!
